University Settlement, Settlement & Social Services requires a Seniors Services Worker.
Job Function:
To work as a member of the Settlement & Social Services department, with particular responsibility for coordinating and administering social service programs for older adults. This role may involve the application of established methods and may involve a choice of methods.
Reports to:Director, Settlement & Social Services
Responsibilities:
- Work effectively as a member of a team responsible for overseeing the programs and activities for seniors.
- Organize activities for seniors such as Birthday celebrations, day trips and outings, festivals, regular fitness, arts and music programs such as Tai Chi, Tai Chi Fan, and Cantonese opera.
- Conduct orientation for older adult newcomers.
- Recruit, train and coordinate volunteers helping with various events or activities for seniors.
- Organize fundraising activities and events as determined with the director on an annual basis.
- Implement programs and services that respond to the needs of older adults with the goal of helping to reduce their isolation, facilitate their participation in building a healthy community, and to promote greater intergenerational and cultural understanding among community members.
- Generate opportunities for older adults to come together and share their interests and concerns, and provide staff support to associations of seniors in order to assist them in articulating issues and pursuing their goals.
- Provide information and referral for seniors, assisting them through translation, preparing applications or completing forms, and helping them gain knowledge and understanding of issues concerning them, become aware of available support services and build strong social networks
- Facilitate educational workshops for older adults on settlement issues, health and safety and other areas of interest or concern relevant to seniors.
- Assist the department in developing and implementing strategies to maintain current sensitivity to the issues and expectations of older adults in the community.
- Work closely with other agencies serving seniors, and relevant government departments, to develop a coordinated, community-based service network, which supports the health and well being of older adults, and provides an alternative to institutionalization.
- Develop outreach materials and ensure accessibility to the program through widespread publicity of services, programs and events.
- Maintain accurate records and reports of programs, services and events conducted.
- Ensures that all statistical, narrative and financial reporting is submitted in an accurate and timely fashion.
- Undertake other duties as assigned by Director.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor level Degree in Social Work or equivalent combination of experience and education in a relevant field or a College Certificate in gerontology or health promotion would be an asset
- Six (6) months to one (1) year of related experience
- Demonstrated familiarity with services and issues concerning older adults
- Multicultural experience
- Fluency in oral/written English
- Fluency in oral/written Cantonese/Mandarin an asset
- Familiar with community and social services in the City of Toronto, in particular the west central downtown and experienced in working with community organizations
This is a part-time unionized position scheduled to work 21 hours per week
Salary: $17.68 per hour plus 40cents in lieu of benefits. (Rate includes pay equity)
