Family Services York Region requires a Group Counsellor.

Family Services York Region and Social Services Network partner together to offer the South Asian Outreach Program. Outreach, education and counselling services are provided to South Asian communities in York Region. Women’s information and support groups are offered that respond to the identified needs of the participants, including abuse issues.

The Group Counsellor will facilitate Information and Support Groups for South Asian women in Vaughan.

Responsibilities:

• Facilitate South Asian Women’s Information and Support groups as required.
  
• Coordinate community outreach activities to publicize groups and engage women in groups.
  
• Provide supportive counselling and referrals between group meetings to clients attending women’s support groups.
  
• Provide crisis intervention, safety planning and risk management services as necessary.
  
• Maintain client records and agency statistics.
  
• Attend team meetings, general staff meetings and supervision as required.
  

Qualifications:

• B.S.W. or M.S.W. or equivalent combination of social services education and experience.
  
• Fluency in Punjabi, Urdu, and/or Hindi languages, as well as English.
  
• Demonstrated experience facilitating support groups.
  
• Sensitivity to issues of culture and diversity.
  
• Knowledge of issues related to domestic violence and sexual abuse/assault.
  
• Excellent interpersonal, organizational and time management skills.
  
• Ability to work flexible hours, including evening and weekends.
  

This is a part-time position for approximately 4 hours per week The hours are flexible and may be negotiated.
