Youth Education and Training Specialist

Responsibilities:

  • Provide employment related group sessions, counselling and follow-up to youth clients
  • Plan and conduct Outreach/Presentation activities with community groups, education and training institutions, government sites and community organizations
  • Conduct needs assessment, develop action plan and follow-up with clients and employers
  • Provide employment/career counselling, guidance and assistance to job seekers
  • Provide links between eligible clients and resources in the community, training/upgrading programs, social services and government programs
  • Provide specialized group sessions for job seekers, educators and/or employers
  • Maintain detailed and accurate written records and documentation
  • Participate in other activities related to the youth centre

Qualifications:

  • Post secondary education in human/social services and/or a combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated interest in working with newcomer youth
  • Demonstrated knowledge of college and university admissions process
  • Demonstrated knowledge of academic financial support for students (loans, bursaries, scholarships, etc)
  • Experience in career planning
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, French an asset Self-directed and result oriented
  • Able to work in a team environment Excellent computer skills including: Microsoft Office, Windows XP, Internet and email systems and the ability to work with customized software, such as the internal database
  • Knowledge of community services
  • Demonstrated knowledge of anti-racism and cultural sensitivity awareness
  • Work experience in career development field focusing on client outreach, group facilitation, individual employment/career counselling and portfolio development
  • Knowledge of current labour market trends and labour laws
  • Knowledge of general and employment/education related issues/barriers faced by newcomer youth
  • Experience working with immigrants, internationally educated professionals/tradespeople, visible minorities with a focus on newcomer youth
  • Group facilitation and conflict transformation skills Ability to work days, evenings and weekends
