Interval House is seeking Full-time and Relief Staff for the position of: Women’s Counsellor/ Advocate.

Summary: Incumbents will be responsible for helping the women and children in our Residential Programs to deal effectively with the impact of violence on their lives. They will work cooperatively according to schedules that include day, evening, night and weekend shifts with duties at the Shelter and/or in the community.

Interval House provides a continuum of residential and community services for women and children fleeing abusive relationships. The Residential Program provides a safe physical environment, and emotional and psychological support services that enable women and children to rebuild their lives free from violence. Community Programs help these women to find suitable housing and provide them with skill-building and career development services that reinforce their employability, strengthen their self-confidence and assist them in setting personal plans and goals that will help them to become socially and economically self-sufficient.

Responsibilities:
(include but are not limited to the following)

  • Staffing the 24-Hour Crisis Telephone Line
  • Responding to emergency situations as required
  • Undertaking needs assessment; Using the Case Management System
  • Providing counseling-related information and resources
  • Delivering supportive individual and group counseling services
  • Managing effective conflict resolution
  • Implementing and coordinating Shelter operations
  • Performing on-call duties, Carrying out general office administration that includes maintaining up-to-date documentation with routine and incident-related record-keeping, statistical data, and report writing. Expectations: Incumbents will adhere to Interval House’s mission, vision, policies and practices within a performance management accountability system.
  • They will ensure effective internal and external communications and participate in ongoing team building and teamwork.

Qualifications:

  • Post secondary education and/or related experience in counselling and advocacy for women is essential
  • Similar experience with children is an asset. 
  • Demonstrated experience working with people of diverse cultures and races. 
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Experience working in a Residential setting. 
  • Demonstrated group facilitation skills and experience.
  • Skills and experience in program planning and implementation. 
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of issues affecting women and children who have experienced abuse.
  • Experience in providing resources and support to them.
  • Must possess a valid First Aid/CPR certificate

This is a part-time and full-time position.
