India Rainbow Community Services of Peel (IRCS), Immigration Settlement and Adaptation Program (ISAP) requires a Settlement Counsellor.
India Rainbow Community Services of Peel (IRCS) is a charitable, non-profit, community based organization. Their services are non-religious and non-political. Their mission is to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate services to the Peel immigrant community, enabling integration and supporting their settlement, social services, health, and educational needs.
Position Summary:
Under the general guidance of the Settlement Supervisor, the incumbent will provide access counseling, interpretation,settlement services and integration support to newcomers in a positive, culturally sensitive, constructive and supportive manner.
Reports to: Settlement Supervisor
Responsibilities:
(but not limited to)
- Develop and implement a program that serves the needs of newcomers that addresses social, cultural, economic, educational integration issues and settlement needs
- Provide settlement information and counselling services
- Provide assessment, information and orientation services to newcomers
- Facilitate appropriate referrals and access to services within the community
- Organize, plan and implement group sessions
- Conduct community outreach to promote IRCS programs and services
- Prepare and submit statistical and progress reports to supervisor as required
- Translation of documents and interpretation
- Assist with completion of government and other forms
- Train and mentor volunteer/student placements and summer students
- Perform other related services as required
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in Settlement Counselling, Community Development, Social Services, Human Services or a related field
- 1 – 2 years work experience in the non profit sector in settlement and/or community work
- Knowledge of community resources and services
- Thorough understanding of issues and challenges affecting newcomers, the immigrant and refugee communities
- Strong interview, assessment, analytical and problem solving skills
- Ability to work effectively with other service providers, agencies and the public
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team setting
- Strong computer skills in an MS Office environment
- Superior communication skills, oral and written, in English and Punjabi a must
- Valid Ontario Driver’s License and access to a car is required
- Must be flexible to work between the hours of 9:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. as daily working hours will be staggered.
This is a full-time maternity leave contract position scheduled to work 35 hours a week - staggered hours
