Newcomer Youth Information & Referral Specialist

The YMCA of Greater Toronto requires a Newcomer Youth Information & Referral Specialist.

Nature & Scope:

The YMCA of Greater Toronto is a charity offering opportunities for personal growth, community involvement and leadership. YMCA Employment and Community Programs provide a variety of employment, counselling, outreach, intervention, training and newcomer programs to youth and adults throughout the GTA.

The Newcomer Information Centre (NIC) is an information and referral services organization where newcomers can access relevant information to make their settlement in Toronto an easier process. Newcomer Youth Services focus on settlement, education, employment and training issues and community involvement.

The Newcomer Youth Information and Referral Specialist develops and facilitates sessions for newcomer youth that are relevant to their settlement process and which encourage them to become involved within their new communities. The Specialist is responsible for overseeing community outreach, involvement, program evaluation and reporting.

Responsibilities:

  • Recruits, and registers newcomer youth; greets youth with a warm and welcoming approach; assists newcomer youth to make a smooth transition into Canada
  • Conducts needs assessment and referral; provides youth members with an orientation to all services available at the YMCA; maintains youth members information
  • Researches, collects and organizes settlement-related information pertaining to youth; ensures information is relevant, accurate and up-to-date
  • Develops and facilitates group information sessions; develops guest speakers series
  • Conducts community outreach: building and cultivating relations
  • Works closely with and provides support to the Senior Team in order to achieve quality, fiscal and program targets; participates in program evaluation and follow-up; maintains and submits statistical and progress reports
  • Remains alert to immigration and newcomer trends and report these to the Newcomer Senior Team
  • Understands and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism and imparts this knowledge and belief upon staff, volunteers and members
  • Models appropriate behaviours to staff in line with our Mission, Vision and Values; establishes rapport and maintains effective relationship building behaviours with staff and members. Represents the YMCA and the
  • Association in a professional manner.
  • Handles additional tasks as required by the Newcomer Senior Team

Qualifications:

  • University Degree or Community College Diploma on related field or equivalent training/work experience. Child and Youth Worker Diploma, Career and Work Counselling Diploma, Community Work Diploma, Life Skills Certificate an asset
  • Experience and sensitivity dealing with youth, members, staff and volunteers of different cultural and racial backgrounds, including visible and invisible dimensions of diversity
  • Demonstrated knowledge of settlement services, post secondary education and community information resources
  • Superior presentation, facilitation, and organization skills
  • Proficient with personal computer applications, e.g. Microsoft Office, Microsoft Outlook, and Internet search engines
  • Well developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, community partners, staff and volunteers; excellent written communication skills.
  • Flexibility regarding work hours including evenings and Saturdays and at different YMCA locations
  • Ability to communicate in another language is a requirement
