Refugee Coordinator (English-speaking)

Amnesty Canada is seeking a Refugee Coordinator to work out of the Toronto Amnesty office. 

The Refugee Coordinator shares the responsibility of managing the Refugee Program of Amnesty Canada (ES) with one other staff person.   Together they oversee the work done on behalf of refugees within Amnesty Canada.  This includes training and supporting a national network of volunteers to

  • Assess the claims of failed refugee claimants
  • Intervene on Canadian refugee law reform and policy and
  • Engage in public education on behalf of refugees

The person recruited for this post will be expected to carry out some work in each of these areas, but will give priority attention to casework with failed refugee claimants.  The Coordinator intervenes on behalf of persons in need of protection who fall within AI=s mandate, works with other Canadian refugee organizations on refugee issues, and responds to enquiries concerning AI and refugees.

Requirements:

  • Excellent communicator  - writing and speaking
  • Ability to read and analyse refugee protection decisions
  • 3 years experience working with refugee applicants in Canada
  • Familiarity with Canadian refugee policy, practice and procedures
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with a wide cross-section of people, including co-workers, AI members, other organizations and government officials
  • Experience delivering training sessions
  • A very thorough knowledge of Amnesty International - or ability to acquire same quickly
  • Strong background in human rights or refugee protection
  • NGO staff or volunteer experience
  • Relevant university degree or equivalent work experience
  • Ability to work independently and responsibly
  • Ability to speak French an asset

This is a part-time (30 hrs/wk) permanent position beginning as soon as possible
Salary:  $27.51 - $28.30 per hour (depending on experience and non-negotiable) plus benefits
