Legal Program Director

METRAC requires a Legal Program Director.

METRAC is a not-for-profit, woman-centred, anti-violence community organization governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. We work in partnership with community groups, organizations, funders and governments to ensure that diverse women, youth, and children can live free from violence and the threat or fear of violence. Our work includes outreach and public education, training, safety initiatives, research, policy development and reform and consultation on the issue of violence against women and children. Position Summary:

The Legal Program Director provides leadership in planning, implementing and evaluating METRAC's Community Justice Program. She works as part of the management team to direct the Justice Program in the following areas: developing and writing legal information materials, building community capacity through legal information training; providing legal analysis; participating in law reform advocacy; public speaking, and supervising the coordination of online legal resources for women who experience violence and their supporters.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensures that the mission and objectives of METRAC are being met in the operation of a Community Justice Program
  • Develops and updates legal information materials
  • Develops and delivers legal information training
  • Consults and collaborates with community groups and government officials/agencies with respect to law reform and policy affecting the equality rights of women who experience violence
  • Participates in public speaking at conferences and media interviews
  • Provides proactive and timely response to media inquiries i.e. radio, T.V., print media
  • Supervises contract staff and volunteers (for the delivery of trainings)
  • Works with the Coordinator of Ontario Women?s Justice Network www.owjn.org to support her with web postings and updates
  • Responds to individual requests for legal information from women experiencing violence and their service providers
  • Writes reports and funding proposals
  • Develops fee for service work with institutions, unions and the private sector
  • May be required to work some evenings
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  • Law degree or graduate degree in criminology or other relevant field
  • Advanced knowledge of the issue of violence against women
  • Advanced knowledge of family and criminal legal systems in Ontario and Canada
  • Feminist, anti-oppression/intersectional analysis of law, legal systems and law enforcement
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Strong advocacy skills
  • Comfortable with public speaking, facilitating community groups and relating to the media
  • Experience in grant and report writing
  • Demonstrated experience in project management
  • Comfortable working independently and collaboratively as part of a small staff team
  • Ability to work in a community agency with limited resources
  • Computer literacy (word processing, e-mail, internet, research)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in speaking languages in addition to English is an asset
HOURS OF WORK: 5 days per week
