Executive Director

Ontario Network of Employment Skills Training Projects (ONESTEP) requires an Executive Director.

For over 20 years, ONESTEP has taken a leadership role to advance the value, the services and the contributions of the community based training sector. ONESTEP advocates for appropriate and sustainable funding to invest in training and employment organizations, who are working to meet the needs of marginalized clients with barriers to accessing sustainable jobs.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will continue to shape this dynamic organization, reinforcing its credibility as the voice of the community based training sector.

Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of the Executive Director can be organized into the following prioritized categories:

Planning and Project Management
In implementing the strategic directions of the Board, the ED will:

  • Support Board strategic discussions and develop work plans and timetables keyed to the strategic Board directions with appropriate milestones and resource allocations and obtain Board sanction
  • Gather such intelligence and environmental assessment as needed to inform said work plans and provide reality checks or variance recommendations to the Board
  • Establish sound working relationships and collaborative arrangements with key external stakeholders and community organizations to support plan implementation
  • Ensure that adequate funds are available to permit ONESTEP to carry out its work
Board and Membership Support and Communications
To ensure continued support and commitment, the ED will:
  • Provide the Board with needed information and analysis to support informed planning and direction setting and regularly report to the Board on the state of the organization and planned activities
  • Ensure the membership is fully informed and has ample opportunity for input into and consultation on directions and planning, with an emphasis on maintaining vibrant regional networks and local planning
  • Support member capacity building by assisting and promoting local/regional developmental opportunities and resource access
Financial Accountability
  • Prepare annual budget and, after Board approval, implement and maintain required accounts and reports in compliance with applicable legislation/regulations, GAAP and Board policies with regular oversight by the Treasurer
  • Ensure adequate Board reporting procedures and reports are in place to support the Board in fulfilling its fiduciary responsibilities and maintaining a comprehensive understanding of the organizatin's current and projected financial position
  • Practice financial vibrancy by seeking new sources of revenue including productive enterprise, fee-for-service training and other options independent of government or foundation funding
  • Delegate day-to-day accounting and administrative duties to subordinate staff and/or external contractors while maintaining oversight
Stakeholder and Public Relations
Recognizing the importance of political capital and broad constituencies of support, the ED will:
  • Advance the visibility and influence of ONESTEP by publicizing its activities and achievements using a breadth of technology, regional representatives and personal communications
  • Develop and maintain strategic networks and contacts for information gathering and dialogue
  • Represent ONESTEP at events and selected working groups along with the President and/or designated directors, as arranged
Internal Administration
To maintain the organization's resources and ensure their conservation, the ED will:
  • Take responsibility for recruiting, contacting, supervising and releasing all employees and contractors within Board policies, legislated guidelines and leading practices in the sector
  • Lead and manage a staff team, including any temporary/unpaid workers, ensuring progressive personnel practices, positive morale and quality performance
  • Advise the Board annually on administrative and personnel matters as per policy
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 5 years work experience at a management level in the non-profit sector, preferably related to employment and training services
  • A post-secondary degree in the social sciences, public administration or business disciplines or equivalent experience
  • Prior work with policy development, strategic planning, project management and organizational capacity building
  • Familiarity with the Ontario labour market, past/present issues and challenges related to service delivery a distinct asset
  • Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated success in proposal writing, in particular corporate sponsorship development
  • Positive experience in relationship building within relevant federal, provincial and regional/municipal governments and the employment training sector in Ontario is a distinct asset
  • Fluency in written and spoken French isan asset
  • Service experience with one or more of the following constituencies (youth, newcomers, women, aboriginals, persons with disabilities, literacy/ESL, visible minorities)
  • Committed to values of collaboration, participatory decision making, advocacy and social reform
